At Terry Physical Therapy, we love our winter Texans! We know our mild winters provide you with the freedom and opportunity to stay active all year long. We also know that many of our seasonal snowbirds often experience joint pain, balance issues, and other concerns that can make it hard to enjoy the benefits of a South Texas winter.
Fortunately, our team is here to help address any challenges you might face. Our physical therapy services can help improve mobility, strength, and confidence in daily activities. That way, you can make the most of the season.

Five Ways We Can Help Winter Texans Have a Great Stay in Penitas and Mission
Balance and Fall Prevention
Falls are one of the most significant issues retirees need to watch out for. Even a minor fall can lead to loss of confidence and reduced activity. Fortunately, we offer personalized fall prevention programs to help reduce your risk and regain trust in your body. These programs typically include:
Balance Training
- Exercises that improve coordination, posture, and stability.
Gait Training
- Practice walking in a safe, structured setting to correct stride and build confidence.
Strength Building
- Focused work on leg and core muscles to make everyday movements easier.
Vertigo and Dizziness Treatment
Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness that creates a spinning sensation. It can make everyday activities more difficult and increase your risk of falling. However, physical therapy can help you manage your symptoms so you can make the most of your time here! Vertigo treatment typically includes:
Vestibular Rehabilitation
- Exercises that retrain the balance system in the brain and inner ear, as disruptions in these processes are the most common cause of vertigo.
Epley Maneuvers
- Specialized head movements to dislodge the crystal deposits in the inner ear that can trigger vertigo.
Balance Practice
- Restoring stability so you can move confidently.
Joint Pain and Arthritis Management
Don’t let arthritis keep you from living a full, active life! While it’s true that arthritis can’t be reversed, you can absolutely manage your symptoms with some help from our team. We’ll work with you to keep you moving without discomfort so you can continue your favorite activities–from golfing to country dancing. Our approach typically includes:
Manual Therapy
- Hands-on treatment to relieve stiffness and improve range of motion.
Modalities
- Treatments like ultrasound or laser therapy can ease pain and improve circulation.
Low-Impact Exercise
- Simple strength and mobility exercises tailored to your condition, including on our Alter-G antigravity treadmill.
Hip Pain Management
We often see hip pain among our winter Texan patients. It can stem from any number of causes, including overuse injuries. If you love hitting the honky tonks on the weekend, know that the repetitive movements in two-stepping could be an underlying reason for your hip pain! However, we can help address it with the following:
Manual Therapy and Mobility Work
- Techniques to relieve stiffness and improve hip motion.
Strengthening Exercises
- Focused work on the hip and core muscles to support the joint during movement.
Gait Training
- Improving your walking patterns to reduce strain.
Improving General Fitness
Even if you don’t have a specific diagnosis, physical therapy can still help you live a healthier lifestyle! Here’s how:
Mobility Sessions
- Guided movements to keep joints loose and reduce stiffness.
Personalized Strengthening Programs
- Structured routines that improve muscle tone and endurance.
Cardio Training
- Safe, low-impact exercise that supports heart health.

If you like hummus, this is a game changer! Once I made it, I stopped buying store bought hummus.

Exercise of the Month
ERGONOMIC STRETCH
This simple stretch is designed to ease tension, improve posture, and prevent stiffness from long hours at a desk or computer.
How to do it:
- Perform stretch for 20–30 seconds
- Complete 2–3 repetitions
- Repeat 2–3 times per day (morning, midday, and evening, or whenever you feel tightness)
This stretch should feel like a gentle pull, not pain. Over time, doing it consistently helps reduce discomfort and keep you moving more comfortably throughout your workday.

Trick-or-Treating with the Grandkids? Make Sure to Warm Up First!
You’re not as limber as you used to be–but the grandkids need their favorite spooky chaperone when they hit up the neighborhood this Halloween. What’s a grandparent to do?
One tip to remember is that trick-or-treating is good old-fashioned exercise, so you shouldn’t go into it cold. While the kids are putting on their costumes, take 5-10 minutes to perform some gentle dynamic stretches before you hit the streets.
Not sure what to do? Want to make sure you don’t accidentally hurt yourself? Our physical therapists can give you some guidelines and suggestions. Call us today to schedule an appointment!

How To Have a Healthy Halloween
Afraid you’ll be dealing with an excess of Halloween treats until long after Valentine’s Day? Here are some ideas for enjoying the evening’s haul responsibly and getting rid of leftover candy:
- Let each child keep enough candy to have one or two pieces a day for one or two weeks ‒ long enough for the excitement to wane. Throw away, donate or repurpose the rest.
- When your child asks for a piece of candy, pair it with a healthy snack: an apple, a banana, some nuts or celery with peanut butter.
- “Buy back” candy from your child with money or tokens they can trade in for a fun activity: a day at the zoo, an afternoon playing at the park, ice skating or a day at the pool.
- Some dentists’ offices have buy-back or trade-in programs, too.
- Save it for holiday baking.
- Save it to fill the piñata at the next birthday celebration or give out with Valentine cards.
- Use it in an arts and crafts project or to decorate a holiday gingerbread house.
- Donate excess candy to a homeless shelter, children’s hospital or care package program for troops overseas. A familiar sweet treat from home can be comforting at the holidays.
- Have no fear – you got this! Let’s make Halloween fun, spooky and a little healthier, too.
